This
picture of an "on-stage battle of dueling guitars" between Carlos
Santana and David Brown displays many rhetorical aspects. This post is
about the Pathos used in this picture from Woodstock. This picture offers the idea of unity by using Pathos to illustrate a bond between these two men. If you look at their body posture, you can tell that their heads are leaned towards each other, trying to be close. If they didn't have some sort of bond, they could have just put there guitars close, still showing the intensity of the moment without being close to someone on a hot, sweaty stage. Instead, they lean in and actually try to be close. The author uses this feeling of comradely and extrapolates it to a feeling of unity through implication. If these two men can be this close, despite their different races, and share this great bond, then you can at least get along with the person next to you, regardless of their skin color.
I think you did an excellent job at picking apart the photo to find a genuine, underlying idea that the author is trying to convey. Although these men are different races, their body emotions depict the idea of friendship and togetherness, despite society's conflicting view against it.
ReplyDeleteYou really captured the idea of unity between these men in this picture, and I believe that is key. The viewer looks at this picture and cannot help but to feel happy for this bond between two men of different color.

ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that the lean gives this photo everything. Carlos Santana is even looking at David Brown and acknowledging that he knows who he's up on stage with and they are sharing a bond between cultures that wasn't common for that time period. They look like best friends who have been in a band together for years and trust each other and are comfortable with each other.
